6/17 Swim Meet Results

The results are in for last weekend's swim meet: Abe won two 2nd places, one 3rd, and a 4th (in a relay); Joy won two 2nd and two 1st place ribbons! What great swimmers we have. Details below.

The meet was held at Thatcher Pool -- that's a first in 6 years. The pool is small and was quite crowded even though Safford was not invited to this meet (Pima and Morenci). It was a very hot, windy afternoon and evening; we felt like we were all in a blow dryer at the beginning for thie first hour. My car was in the shop and Jared was out of town, so Teleysha was kind enough to drive us to the meet and Lisa Allred drove us home. We sat by Teleysha and I think that helped Sariah be confident enough to say she would swim in the next meet. Lisa was a timer, and you can hear her cheering Abe on in one of the videos below. Porter Christensen joined us for a while until his dad got there. Thatcher organization was not quite up to speed and there are only 6 lanes, so the meet was slow going.

Events and Times:
Abe (11-12 year olds)
100 Freestyle 1:30:08 (2nd)
50 Breaststroke 52:13 (2nd)
50 Freestyle 40:50 (3rd)

He started this meet with no entry times because it was not the first meet of the season so I did not have his times. Since the meet was at Thatcher, I think the coach was understandably too preoccupied to put his times on. So here is the heat where he was seeded oddly and actuallytook 3rd (but a clear first in this heat).

(vidoes to uplaod later when the system will work)

Events and Times:
Joy (age 7-8)

25 Butterfly 30:82 (2nd)
25 Backstroke 30:81 (2nd)
25 Breaststroke 32:62 (1st)
25 Freestyle 28:73 (1st)

Joy swam slow, she was sort of grumpy and not excited to swim. Then one of her friends told her she would not be her friend any more, and made her cry. The young girls don't know how to be friends and still compete, and it is more important to Joy to be friends than to win. (The "friend" also beat her by a hair in those two events, so maybe she just knows the "head game" better. She is also an August birthday, so she is actually a year older than Joy.) But I have also had to convince Joy that coming in second is not "losing the race", as she puts it.

Joy the mermaid.

25 Freestyle. She slows to get the water out of her goggles and comes in second.

Joy wins the breaststroke for 8 and under.

2nd leg of freestyle relay, she passes all the other teams.

Backstroke. Struggles with lane lines and fear of head hitting.

25 Butterfly. This was her first event of the evening. My camera stopped recording before the end because it was full, but she came in first. She had never swam (swum?) fly before.
